Van Gogh painted this painting in homage to his brother Théo's son, Vincent Willem (born January 31, 1890), of whom he is godfather. To symbolize this new life, Vincent chose to represent the branches of an almond tree, one of the earliest trees in spring which, already in February, is adorned with flowers to announce its arrival.
