François Lemoyne painted the Apotheosis of Hercules from 1733 to 1736, on the ceiling of the Salon d'Hercules, thus creating one of the largest painted ceilings in the world. Hercules, conqueror of vices and monsters, ascends towards Olympus on a chariot pulled by the genies of Virtue.
