Created in 1898 by the French artist Paul Signac in pointillist style, the work represents a cape on the Ligurian Riviera, near Genoa, in Noli. Signac hiked there from Saint-Tropez two years before the painting was completed, and of his intentions he wrote that he "wanted to bring every corner of the canvas to the absolute extreme in terms of color".
