This oil on canvas produced in 1881 consists of a horizon line dividing the painting into two apparently equal parts. The top section depicts a calm sky through which Vesuvius can be discerned in the distance; its smoke discreetly mixes with the atmosphere. Far from conveying a feeling of danger, the emanations from the volcano are more like purplish clouds.
